Early Education
Kamal Ranadive was always a brilliant student. She completed her schooling with exceptionally well grades from Huzurpaga: the H.H.C.P. High School. Afterward, Kamal RanadiveA began her College education at Fergusson College, where Botony and Zoology were her significant subjects. Later, she got a distinction in Bachelor of Sciences (B.S.C) degree in 1934.
Afterward, she relocated to the Agriculture College at Pune, where she completed her Master’s degree (M.S.C.) in 1943 with cytogenetics of Annonaceae as the primary subject.
Married Life
Kamal Ranadive’s father’s wish was that she should marry a doctor, but she married a mathematician named Jayasingh Trimbak Ranadive. They got married in 1939. J.T.Ranadive was a very supportive husband. He encouraged his wife to pursue her post-graduate studies.
Higher Education
Kamal and her husband relocated to Bombay. She then enrolled at Bombay University under the guidance of pathologist Dr. V.R. Khanolkar, who established the Indian Research Center. In 1949, Kamal earned her Ph.D. in cytology.
Kamal then went to the U.S.A. to pursue a postdoctoral fellowship under the advice of Dr. V.R.Khanolkar. She studied at John Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. Kamal learned innovative tissue culture methods for primary and secondary cell lines while working for Dr. George Gey, famous for creating the widely used HeLa cell line.
Professional Career Of Dr. Kamal Randadive
After finishing her Research at Johns Hopkins, Kamal returned to Mumbai, where she began working for the Indian Cancer Research Centre( ICRC). Here she founded the nation’s first tissue culture laboratory.
Ranadive served as the ICRC’s director and was a pioneer in the field of cancer. She was the first Indian to suggest a connection between certain malignancies and viruses and a link between breast cancer and hereditary issues.
She also researched the pathogen that causes leprosy, Mycobacterium leprae. Her Research contributed to the development of the corresponding vaccination.
Dr. Ranadive established the Indian Women Scientists’ Association (I.W.S.A.) in 1973 with the help of 11 colleagues to support women in the sciences.
